They are fucking terrible thus far this year. 200 million buys a mediocre hitting team and an even worse pitching team? They are full of big names past their prime.
Look at their lineup:
C - Posada: Older, but coming off his best year last season. Injured.
1B - Giambi: Has gotten worse every year since becoming a Yankee.
2B - Cano: Good young hitter has yet another terrible start. Hopefully he will redeem himself in the later months like he has the last few years.
SS - Jeter: Still a good, solid player, but isn't having the impact a player of his stature should. Could be declining a bit with age.
3B - ARod: Best player in the game, but injured.
OF - Abreu: Overpaid and washed up. Nothing but a mediocre hitter anymore.
OF - Matsui: A bit overpaid but still can be a productive hitter. Lacks the power he showed when he first came over from Japan. It wouldn't be so bad if everyone around him could live up to their billing.
OF - Melky: A decent young OF that isn't and never will be a great hitter. He can get the job done, which would be adequate if we had more talent.
DH - Damon: Start off well, but has slid back down to what we have seen from the last few years. Another overpaid and underproducing player.
This is supposed to be the Bronx Bombers. You look at the names and there is countless All Star appearances amongst them all. Yet not one is remotely playing up to that type of level right now.
